This is a census-designated place (CDP) and township in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. In 2010, there were 26,505 people in the city, up from 22,770 in 2000. The Kennecott Smokestack is the tallest free-standing structure in the United States west of the Mississippi River, according to the Kennecott website. Settlement in the area began in 1851 after Mormon pioneers reached Salt Lake Valley. The first farmers settled in Pleasant Green in 1868 at the base of the northern Oquirrh Mountains. By 1900, about 20 families lived there. Abraham Coon, who lived in a ranch and settlement at about 5400 South, was one of the first Pleasant Green pioneers. The canyon is now called Coon Canyon, and Coon Creek flows out of it. This is one of the major drainages of the Oquirrh Mountains. Through Magna, Coon Creek flows north and west into the Great Salt Lake.
